Trip Informations
Guided by an expert local leader, this 14-day cycling trip through Sri Lanka will take you to tea plantations, fishing villages, national parks, cities and lush green jungles. From Negombo to Colombo, you’ll see why Sri Lanka is Asia’s most exciting new destination. With pristine coastline, ancient ruins, rugged peaks and wildlife-filled national parks, it’s a dream for travellers who like to get active. In between two-wheeled treks, you can go on safari to spot leopards, take on optional food crawls, laze on the beaches of the southern coast, ride the rails (a must in Sri Lanka), explore the country’s premier Hindu and Buddhist sites, and see the famed UNESCO World Heritage site of Sigiriya. With days of riding and nights of feasting, Sri Lanka will soon make its way to your heart.
Why you’ll love this trip
verified
Ride to Sigiriya – an ancient rock fortress surrounded by lush greenery. Climb the stairs of Lion Rock and be rewarded for your efforts with a morning breakfast at the top with panoramic views.
verified
Cycle to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Anuradhapura and enjoy a guided bicycle tour of the ancient city, riding through woodlands, exploring the ruins and getting a peek of the sacred old Bo Tree.
verified
Step back in time as you explore Sri Lanka’s most important religious and heritage sites, including the Temple of Tooth Relic and Kataragama.
verified
Join optional food crawls in most locations and connect with the best local street food – from the freshly caught seafood of Negombo to the pulsing night markets of Colombo, this is the best way to experience Sri Lanka’s food cuisine.
verified
After cycling through cities, national parks and historic sites, take the chance to relax on the sandy beaches of the southern coast. Go swimming in the clear waters, take an optional cycle to nearby Weligama to see the colourful fishing boats selling their catch on the shore and watch the sunset.
Is this trip right for you?
verified
To complete this trip, it’s important that you’re both confident and competent in riding a bicycle. As the riding is mostly on sealed roads in varying states of repair, with the occasional gravel path, no technical cycling skills are required. But some downhill practice is a great idea before your trip.
verified
While the cycling distances on this trip are relatively short, the terrain of Sri Lanka is naturally hilly, so you’ll need to be reasonably fit, especially given the warm climate. This applies to the included activities which can add to the potential fatigue. The support vehicle will always be there if you need to take a break for an hour or a day.
verified
On this trip you have an expert cycling leader as well as a cycling guide/mechanic with you.
verified
Sri Lankan summers are very hot, with short, sharp monsoons in the southwest. Be sure to use adequate sun protection and drink plenty of water. The weather in this region also varies seasonally, so be prepared to get sweaty, and experience the occasional rainstorm, which may lead to a change of plans.
verified
If you have issues with heights, you might like to opt out of climbing the Lion Rock at Sigiriya (Day 6). There are lots of rough, narrow steps and tight walkways here.
verified
If you feel like doing all the riding but with less effort, you can hire an electric bike (e-bike) on this trip.
verified
Some temples on this trip require your head to be uncovered when visiting. You can opt out of temple visits if this requirement doesn't suit you.

The Cycling Sri Lanka trip was the perfect balance between having fun on the bike, seeing the countryside and learning about the culture and day to day life. Our leader Ku was fantastic. He took us on some beautiful cycling roads where we always felt safe and was incredibly knowledgeable about everything we saw.

The 13 day cycling tour of Sri Lanka was exceptional. The highlight was cycling passed lakes, through villages and through tea plantations. People smiled and waved as we passed by. We also visited the historical sites and temples and it was a very rich experience.

I had a wonderful cycling trip in Sri Lanka and would highly recommend it. The cycling was fairly easy overall and very manageable if you’re a regular cyclist, with comfortable daily distances and good pacing. The scenery was beautiful throughout — lush countryside, lots of elephants, and cultural sites that made every ride interesting.
One of the highlights for me was learning about the history of Sri Lanka along the way. The stories and context really added depth to the experience beyond just the riding.
Our guide, Ku, was excellent — knowledgeable, supportive, and well organized. He made the trip smooth, informative, and fun from start to finish. A great way to explore the country.

The tour of Sri Lanka was first class. A good blend of cycling and activities to get to see the most of this lovely country. Riding was tough at times but the support team were always on hand. Highlights were elephant safari, Lion Rock and leopard safari together with the cycling through the tea plantations. Our guide (Ku) was enthusiastic and caring and ensured we all had a positive tour. We had a great group of 13 and even managed an additional activity to take in the international cricket at Kandy.

This was my first intrepid cycle trip and I loved it. The team led by Ku were wonderful and went above and beyond, even organising a trip to watch England v Sri Lanka cricket.
The cycle distances were perfect and accommodated everyone in the group who were great.
I enjoyed cycling in the tea plantations and lush Sri Lankan countryside, the locals were very friendly. I would definitely recommend this trip. Thanks to Ku, his team and the group for a memorable holiday.

An excellent trip in this fascinating country. About the right mix or cycling as well as historical and cultural elements. Our leader Sam was amazing, both with is organisational and leadership skills but also his willingness to share his immense knowledge of Sri Lanka. He really made the trip.
