verified
Visit the red torii gate standing in the sea in Miyajima, learn about the history of Hiroshima and treat your taste buds to a signature Okonomiyaki pancake and a tasting through Hiroshima's 'sake town'.
verified

Is this trip right for you?

Japan is best explored on foot and by public transport. You’ll need to be fit enough to spend most of each day on your feet and able to handle your luggage as you navigate busy train stations. We recommend comfortable shoes and packing light.
verified
Double rooms in Japanese hotels can be smaller than you may be used to (e.g. 20 sqm). Every effort will be made to accommodate double room requests. However, during busy periods, there may be occasions when we are unable to offer a double room, so a twin room will be provided.
verified
The farm stay on Day 3 will be mostly in Kawane, with a visit to the local tea farm. As our host gets older, they cannot accommodate all our groups, so for some departures, you’ll experience a different homestay instead in Gotemba. In such cases, you'll not visit the tea farm, but your host will show you their wonderful vegetable gardens and you'll take part in helping them pick the veggies needed for a fantastic home-cooked dinner for the night.

If you’re thinking of a trip to Japan to soak up the culture and experience the blend of traditional and modern life, I’d suggest this itinerary. It’s a fantastic mix of free time, exploration and activity that’s also well-cared for by a guide Toshimi who knows the culture and is also funny and entertaining.

My 17 year old daughter and I did the Japan Highlights tour and had an excellent time. It was such a super introduction to the country. It was very well organised, had lots of variety and our leader Yao was great! Looking forward to our next Intrepid trip!

This tour is a must do for first time Japan visitors! You’ll hit all the major areas/landmarks but also find some hidden gems along the way, giving a well-rounded insight to daily life in Japan. A true highlight of the tour is the home stay.

Our 'Essential Japan' was our first Intrepid tour and we loved it. A small group that could experience parts of Japan that we would not have happened. We love small places, not too many people and quiet areas.

We traveled to Japan with our two teenage daughters and had a great experience all around. Toshimi was the best guide we could have asked for. He was full of knowledge about every area we visited and open to any requests of what we wanted to do. Our tour moved at a great pace and we definitely got more out of the trip because of using intrepid tour and having Toshimi as our tour guide. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

I had a fantastic time travelling with intrepid. Our guide went above and beyond to ensure we all got to do what we wanted to do, adjusting the itinerary accordingly. All the transport went smoothly and I was even helped to the point of having the confidence to venture out alone (and once I started I couldn’t stop!). Thank you Toshimi and Intrepid for a beyond expectations trip.
