Trip Informations
Why you’ll love this trip
Explore the Serengeti, a wildlife arena like no other, and look for lions, leopards, elephants and giraffes in this iconic park.
Take a mind-blowing safari across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in an open-roof 4WD vehicle for a chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros.
Embark on a hike through the Usambara Mountains to the Irente viewpoint, then stop at a farm on the way back for a picnic lunch.
Wander around Stone Town’s bustling bazaars and fragrant spice markets, and consider heading on an optional guided tour of the island’s spice plantations.
Accompanied by a local crew — a leader, driver and cook – you'll be in excellent hands for the duration of your adventure.
Is this trip right for you?
This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.tuuur.com/africa/overland https://www.tuuur.com/africa/overland (https://www.tuuur.com/africa/overland)
Camp in the Serengeti National Park itself without fences between you and the animals. Your leader will brief you on the safety measures the group will need to take for the two nights spent in the park.
As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
Itinerary
Safari to sea on an overland African adventure
Travel overland on a 12-day eastern Africa experience all the way to Zanzibar. Whether you’re spotting lions deep in the Serengeti, hiking a lush mountain trail in the Usambara Mountains, cruising on a traditional dhow in the Indian Ocean’s azure waters or interacting with local communities near Mto wa Mbu, you’re set to learn a thing or two about the wonders of these lands and its people. Travel with an expert local leader and a group of likeminded adventurers keen to scour every inch of the Ngorongoro Crater for the Big Five and share travel stories over a seafood meal in Zanzibar.

2. An optional sunrise balloon ride in the Serengeti National Park is possible on this itinerary. Please see the itinerary above for full details of this activity. As the balloon only holds 16 people, places are limited, and we recommend you book in advance. Please inquire when booking your trip to book this optional activity.

The best part was the trip to the Ngorongoro crater and then on to camp in the Serengeti. Long game drives but one exciting event after another. We were just out of peak season and had less disturbance from other Safari trucks. Birdlife was prolific and amazing - even some Flamingos in the crater lake. Our truck was full (22 of us). Our guide was first class in many respects - organisation, approachability, local knowledge. Cook and driver did a great job. Be prepared for a dramatic change in Zanzibar which is all about tourism and beaches - but a welcome chill after the busy days of travelling.

Varied trip with some long drive days . Possibility yo upgrade in all but Serengeti but you would not wish to miss sleeping in unfenced camp ! Nice to do safaris in jeeps not in truck . We are late 60’s and mid 70’s and have completed both this and gorillas and game parks back yo back . Incredible experiences

This was my second experience with Intrepid but surely not the last. I chose them over others for their ethos regarding sustainability and responsible tourism. I chose them again because of the warmth of the team, the great experiences, the great food and because i feel safe with them.

This trip is a great mix of game parks and cultural experiences. Ngorongoro Crater is a place that will forever be a favorite memory with a multitude of animals to spot. Hot air ballooning over the Serengeti is an experience not to miss along with the community walk in Mto Wa Mbu and a traditional dinner cooked with love. The Usumbara mountains were a nice respite from long travel days and a couple of days on the Northern Beaches of Zanzibar wrapped up this little adventure perfectly. Thanks Intrepid for a great crew of Nash, John and Mbithe who provided a great experience.

I absolutely loved the "Road to Zanzibar" trip. Nairobi is such a lively and interesting city. The Serengeti is a life-changing experience. The Usambara Mountains are such a unique place to visit. And Zanzibar, of course, is absolutely breathtaking. While this trip has a lot of driving, I was ready for it and enjoyed watching the countryside change during the long drives. The camping facilities were way better than I expected. The animals in the Serengeti were definitely one of the biggest highlights of the trip! The trip leader (Jackie), the cook (Charles) and the driver (David) were thoughtful, kind and well-organized. I will be recommending this wonderful trip to all of my friends and family. Do not hesitate, book it! You won't regret it!

My trip to “Road of Zanzibar” was truly amazing. The Serengeti was so spiritual and magical to be able to camp in nature surrounded by wild animals. I loved the crater, the mountains, the people and culture. Zanzibar had the most beautiful water and was perfect to end the trip there. My holiday wouldn’t of been the same without the most amazing crew on my adventure,. Professional but also a lot of fun. I can’t wait to travel again. Also thanks to Nicole for helping me organise the trip she was the besr.
