Why you’ll love this trip
Explore the Serengeti, a wildlife arena like no other, and look for lions, leopards, elephants and giraffes in this iconic park.
Take a mind-blowing safari across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in an open-roof 4WD vehicle for a chance to see the endangered black rhinoceros.
Embark on a hike through the Usambara Mountains to the Irente viewpoint, then stop at a farm on the way back for a picnic lunch.
Wander around Stone Town’s bustling bazaars and fragrant spice markets, and consider heading on an optional guided tour of the island’s spice plantations.
Accompanied by a local crew — a leader, driver and cook – you'll be in excellent hands for the duration of your adventure.
Is this trip right for you?
No two journeys in Africa are identical. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days. Be prepared for travel times to be longer or shorter than advised. Weather and road conditions can change things significantly, so embrace the detours, shortcuts, and unforgettable moments along the way.
This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of iconic African wildlife. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page at tuuur.com/africa/overland.
Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You'll be briefed on arrival.
The day-to-day itinerary features a selection of optional activities. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and is intended only as a guide. Prices are approximate and may change at the discretion of the local provider. All activities are subject to availability.

This trip was fantastic! The guide, driver, and chef were all amazing. The trip itinerary was great, and camping out in the Serengeti was incredible! The trip included all kinds of locations, climates, and scenery. Sooooo many incredible animals as well. Highly recommend!

My Intrepid East Africa trip was unforgettable! The itinerary was excellent, especially the thrilling safaris. Huge thanks to Erellah, Ken, and Wilson—their support and energy made everything seamless. The truck was super comfy, and the spacious, high-quality tents made camping a joy. Truly a well-organized and memorable adventure!

Fantastic value for money. The perfect balance of safari and beaches! The guide MJ couldn’t have been better. Henry’s food was out of this world. Rastas driving was super safe. Highly recommend!!

Although quite fit, at 73 I was a bit wary of doing a camping trip to Africa with Intrepid. I was surprised to find I liked sleeping in the tent with sleeping bag and the thinnish mattress was fine. The only problem was I did not have headband torch that is essential for packing in dark, etc. I loved Serengeti and seeing all of the animals - especially the large lion prides. I was a bit anxious about camping out in the wild but all went well with the care taken by guides. Note that that there are some long drives on unsealed roads that can leave you with sore neck and headaches a few- but you have to remember Serengeti is in the wilderness after all! Zanzibar is a lovely island for relaxing and chilling out. on beaches after challenging safari and driving. All in all, a challenging, but most rewarding experience!

Our guide Henry made us feel safe and supported throughout. Steve drove with great care, and Emanuel’s focus on hygiene let us enjoy delicious meals worry-free. All staff created a warm atmosphere and openly shared their knowledge, experiences, and views, making our trip memorable, enroching and enjoyable.

Our trip “Road to Zanzibar” exceeded all expectations and even our hopes. We loved the balance of roughing it with early mornings, cold showers, tent dwelling and rough roads with the relative luxury of ending up relaxing in fascinating Zanzibar. Our cook Emmanuel was amazing, our driver Steven incredible - always smiling - and our tour leader Henry … what can I say? He was the best … very knowledgeable, friendly and kind. He found and showed us incredible wildlife, always maintaining an attitude of respect and care for the animals and the locals. We also had a local driver, ironically called Safari, who drove our jeep on the Serengeti. He was good fun and also a very safe driver. In Zanzibar don’t miss Ali’s tour of Stone Town and his spice tour. He is hilarious. I’m so sad the trip is over. We have made lifelong friends and return much richer in soul than we thought we might. If in two minds, do this tour!

Cannot recommend this trip more. The itinerary was fantastic and I left feeling like I have really seen/experienced the full Tanzania! even the longer travel days were really enjoyable because of the beautiful/variable scenery. The trip was also great value considering what was included (virtually all the delicious meals, local tours, safari and transport). Most importantly however, were our trip leaders/ intrepid staff who truly made this trip what it was - not only did they genuinely care about our enjoyment/comfort and welfare but they were incredibly knowledgeable. Thank you so much - will definitely be booking another Intrepid trip!
